Description

September 28, 2003

  1. The 5th World Trade Organization Ministerial Meeting held in Cancun, Mexico collapsed. Richer countries wanted to talk about newer issues that mostly they themselves would have benefited from. Poorer countries wanted to finish older issues mostly on agriculture that affected them the most, especially the impact of European and U.S. subsidies on their own agriculture and lack of access to those markets. This difference seemed, once again, to highlight the hypocrisy of the richer countries, that preach free trade to the poor, but practice protectionism for themselves. This impasse led to the end of the talks for now but for the first time showed the developing countries make a successful and united stand to represent their concerns. This page has been updated with more information, links and resources.

  6. Some additional information has been added about Venezuela. The coup attempt last year has been accompanied by growing protests against the president, Hugo Chavez. But what a lot of media reporting seem not to mention is that an equally large number of protests are in favor of Chavez, and show a deep class divide between those in support of Chavez and those against. Outside influence has also been reported, including claims by Venezuelan military intelligence that the CIA planned to bring down Chavez's plane on route to New York at a United Nations conference.
