  1. Updates to the Small Arms section have been made. Updates include more statistics about the impact of small arms on societies around the world, and the result of a recent global meeting to assess the progress and lessons learned in implementing the 2001 Programme of Action to address the issue of the illicit trade in small arms.

  2. The Arms Trade spending section has been updated with new information about spending in 2002. The latest figures show 2002 with a decline (mostly due to poor economic conditions worldwide). This is the second consecutive decline in an otherwise generally rising trend in the period 1995-2002. Top sellers over a number of years were generally dominated by the United States, Russia, France, and the United Kingdom, while the top buyers were typically from the Middle East, though increasing in Asia as well. The world continues to spend some 800 billion dollars annually on military spending. Compare that to say the United Nations' 10 billion dollar budget, set up after World War II for "preserving peace through international cooperation and collective security."
